Information about copyright laws and fair use. Find out how to use sections of print, digital, audio, and visual materials legally

General Info

Copyright laws were developed

  • to protect the rights of authors,
  • to clarify what those using copyrighted works can do, and
  • to protect the rights of access to the public.

Using materials legally in an educational setting is easier than you think. Read more about using each type of material by clicking on the appropriate tab. Look at the tab on Fair Use to see what you can potentially use without obtaining permission (only applies to certain situations).

See guide to Creative Commons for an alternative approach to working with intellectual property with fewer restrictions.
