Search Strategies to Improve Your Research

Throughout this guide, you will find different search strategies that you can use to get better results with your research.

What are search terms?

Search terms are words or phrases that you type into a search engine to generate results. It is important to select search terms that are specific enough to generate the results that you need. You can refine search terms as you work and develop a better understanding of your topic!

How to Utilize Search Terms

Let's say that I have a broad research question like: How does New York City's train infrastructure work?

I can pull some search terms from this question like "New York City" and "train infrastructure".

By utilizing my search terms and the Boolean Operator "AND", I was able to get 88 results. If you want to further narrow your results, you can look at the subjects underneath your results. These subjects give you related topics that the article is classified under.

A few subjects that appeared under the articles that I searched included terms like "land subdivision", "architecture and design industries", and "transportation".

You can use these subjects along with Boolean Operators to refine your search. This can help you gather results that are more specific to your needs.
